RE: 503, WA2, Fournier

The purpose of EVOC 503 WA2 was to prepare a Work Study Contract for one of the students in the Automotive Engine Performance course that I teach. The following six criteria were specified:

  1. Comply with all of the General Criteria for Written Assignments.
  2. Develop a "Work Experience Contract" for a particular student. The contract should not be more than 1 page (typewritten or word processed).
  3. Include specific information in the contract about what the STUDENT is expected to do.
  4. Include specific information in the contract about what the EMPLOYER is expected to do.
  5. Include specific information in the contract about what the INSTRUCTOR is expected to do
  6. On the cover memo (see #1 above) indicate and briefly describe at least one specific resource from which additional information about work study programs can be obtained.

The following sources of information were used relative to this assignment:

  1. Fournier, Phil - From my own professional experience.
  2. http://www.tcove.org/instructional/introduction.htm  (This website developed by Tulare County ROP program describes in detail the criteria for developing a successful “community classroom” program for students in an ROP program.)

I believe that the attached proposal meets all six of above listed criteria and respectfully request full credit: one point for meeting each of the above listed criteria.

Work Study Contract for Student Shelby Meyers

Employed by Tom’s Auto Clinic

Studying Automotive Technology at Mt. San Jacinto College

Student’s Responsibility: Shelby Meyers is expected to arrive at Tom’s at 1:00pm, dressed in the uniform provided by Tom’s and to work until 3:00pm each day, Monday through Thursday.  Shelby is expected to abide by the terms of this community classroom contract and the position contract provided by Tom’s.  He is expected to follow the procedures and behavioral standards set forth in the Tom’s Auto Clinic employee handbook and operations manual.  Shelby is expected to provide his supervisor with a list of tasks in which he has received instruction during his classroom education, and with a list of tasks in which he would like to attain hands-on experience.  He is expected to keep a weekly journal of tasks accomplished and review it with the instructor every Friday.  He is expected to advise his supervisor at any time he is in over his head on any task, and to request inspection of any job completed before it is released.

Employer’s Responsibility: Lead technician Ed Garcia will be Shelby’s supervisor during his time of work/study at Tom’s.  Ed will review Shelby’s task list on a weekly basis to compare those hands-on experience attained with those competencies still needed.  Ed will attempt to assign work to Shelby that corresponds to skills that Shelby would like to attain, within limits of work available at Tom’s.  In all cases, work assigned Shelby will have some instructional value.

Instructor’s Responsibility: Instructor Phil Fournier will be responsible to verify that Shelby is meeting his educational goals in the community classroom site.  The instructor will have a bi-monthly meeting with the site supervisor to review the task lists and the progress made towards accomplishing the goal of giving student Shelby Meyers’ hands-on experience within the discipline of Automotive Engine Performance.  Additionally, the instructor will review Shelby’s weekly report on Friday’s to verify satisfactory progress.   During the bi-monthly meeting with the site supervisor, the instructor will verify punctuality, attendance, communication, and any other problems that might arise.

Compensation: Shelby Meyers will not be compensated for time spent at Tom’s Auto Clinic.  Tom’s will not be compensated for time spent in review and instruction of Shelby’s work.  This is designed to be a win-win, such that both parties gain some benefit; Shelby gaining experience and knowledge, and Tom’s gaining good-will in community involvement and a potential future employee.

Signature and Copies:  Both parties will sign this agreement (together with the Tom’s employee handbook and operations manual) and a copy will be kept by each party.
